LOW COST VIDEO SERVER BACKUP OPTIONS

Improvements in video server reliability have changed the way many organizations plan their playout facilities. Today’s video servers have capacities of many hundreds to thousands of hours of storage. If a suitable backup and restoration procedure does not exist, rebuilding a video server’s content can be a time consuming, costly and daunting task, not to mention the loss of on-air revenue.

If your organization’s budget does not allow for a backup video server, a great way to achieve redundancy is to use a JBOD (Just A Bunch of Drives) array. These arrays are low cost and offer significant protection for a video server’s media assets, at a fraction of the cost of a second video server.

In a non-automated environment, redundancy is achieved in its simplest form by manually executing a File Transfer Procedure. Every media file is copied from the video server to the JBOD array. Material must be manually deleted in both the video server and the JBOD array when it has expired.

The Argentem Armir overcomes this synchronization issue. Armir is a video server synchronization application that will automatically copy or delete material to the JBOD array based on ingest and deletion from the video server.

The Armir will also provide the same benefits if a secondary video server is used. Good housekeeping by Armir will eliminate mistakes resulting from re-use of House Names or Clip Names, where old material can exist with the same name as new material.

In the event of a failure of the video server file system, the Armir allows the operator to easily switch the primary and secondary targets so that the media assets can be easily restored to the video server.

Armir reports will assist in assignment of unused House Names, selection of material for air, and searching for expired material.

Armir connects to video servers via Ethernet, leaving the RS422 ports for automation control.
